- Kaiser Wilhelm Museum
The foundation for the Kunstmuseen Krefeld was laid with the opening of the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum (KWM) in 1897.
- Haus Lange Haus Esters
The two villas Haus Lange and Haus Esters were built in 1927/28 by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Haus Lange has been part of the Kunstmuseen Krefeld since 1955 and Haus Esters since 1981. Since then they have been a venue for the presentation of contemporary art and design.
- Collection
From Art Nouveau to ZERO, from Claude Monet to Gerhard Richter - the collection of the Kunstmuseen Krefeld today comprises around 24,000 works of fine and applied art from the late Middle Ages to the present.

Silke Schatz, (1967, Celle, DE), Mothership, 2003
Mothership is actually a lamp: Silke Schatz has taken up the famous Moon Lamp by Danish designer Verner Panton and transformed it into a free-floating sculpture. Paper in the colours of the rainbow is glued to the outside of the thin papier-mâché slats. The inside features collages of photographs and texts. The work brings together themes such as the moon and femininity, peace and motherhood. Through the accumulation of these symbols, it questions traditional ideas about the role of the mother.
This focus highlights one work each month that is new to the collection and not currently on display.
- Collection in Motion
As part of Collection in Motion at the KWM, the Krefeld Art Museums are presenting three new cabinet exhibitions that explore central questions in art. While the exhibition The Memory of Art is dedicated to the themes of memory and the artwork as a monument, Through Time and Space examines these two dimensions and their artistic forms of representation. A third exhibition focuses on the artist Paula Modersohn-Becker and her journey toward abstraction. It’s well worth a visit!

The catalog for our exhibition “Charlotte Perriand. L'Art d'habiter / The Art of Living,” which has just come to an end, is now available! It is now on sale in stores and at our museum shop (Museum edition: 36 Euro).
- "Art Foundation at the Kunstmuseen Krefeld" has just been established
The “Art Foundation at the Kunstmuseen Krefeld” was recently established. The foundation’s purpose is to independently support art, culture, and research at the Kunstmuseen Krefeld. Another key focus is the expansion of the collection. The foundation was initiated by Katia Baudin, director of the Kunstmuseen; the city of Krefeld and Mayor Frank Meyer welcome this development.
