Around 1908, Johan Thorn Prikker designed the wall hanging entitled The Ice Saints, which was woven by Anna Pahde in Krefeld and produced in at least three different colour combinations. Thorn Prikker’s original coloured design is still held in the collection of the Kunstmuseen Krefeld. It was recently restored and is on display in the current exhibition Beautiful Anarchy: Johan Thorn Prikker and His Time at the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum (KWM).
One example of the finished tapestry entered the collection of the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum, from where it was sold to a Bonn art collector in 1921. Decades later, it was eventually acquired by the Bröhan Museum in Berlin through the auction market.
Both the subject matter—the Ice Saints—and the formal design of the textile are unusual for the Rhineland at the time, a decade after German Art Nouveau tapestries had caused a sensation. The lecture explores possible stylistic and thematic models and influences that may have inspired Thorn Prikker in creating this and other pictorial woven textiles. The Nordic countries of Sweden and Norway, as well as Scandinavian textiles from the collection of the Gewebesammlung (Textile Weaving Collection), the predecessor institution of the German Textile Museum, played a particularly important role in this investigation.
Dr Isa Fleischmann-Heck has been Deputy Director and Curator of Modern Textiles and Clothing at the German Textile Museum in Krefeld since 2002. During this time, she has curated numerous exhibitions and authored a wide range of publications. Her research focuses on textiles and fashion from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries.
