In 2019, the American artist Andrea Zittel (b. 1965 in Escondido, CA, lives and works in Joshua Tree, CA) realized a site-specific work for the garden house of Haus Esters as part of the Bauhaus anniversary project Anders Wohnen. With her Planar Panels, she created a usable Gesamtkunstwerk. It explores the connection between inside and outside in modern architecture, as well as the history of the first serially prefabricated garden house by Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau. Zittel’s work will now be extended into the garden and—regularly activated as a meeting place—will invite visitors to enjoy refreshments and snacks. The work expands the spectrum of the sculptures in the gardens of Haus Lange Haus Esters and is also the first contribution by a woman artist. The inauguration of the supplemented installation is the first chapter of Andrea Zittel’s solo exhibition in the fall of 2022.
