An object examined under a magnifying glass, a finding that brings history to light, a movement executed to within a millimetre: conservation is rooted in close observation and requires an extraordinary degree of sensitivity and a sure touch.

Across Germany, visitors can enjoy a varied programme of events at museums, storage facilities, conservation studios and historic building sites on the occasion of the European Day of Conservation-Restoration. They can discover how conservators use scientific and analytical methods to uncover and preserve the stories behind objects.

Cultural heritage reflects society: it tells us about ways of life, technological developments, artistic ideas and personal memories. Whether a film reel, painting, mural or piece of furniture, every object bears the traces of time and of the people who have lived with it.

The motto “Up Close” describes the physical proximity that conservation requires: working within millimetres and carefully approaching surfaces, layers and materials. At the same time, it also refers to an intellectual closeness. Through intensive engagement with each object, conservators gain insight into why people created these things, how successive generations have treated them, and what significance they hold today for collections and visitors.

This year, for the first time, the Kunstmuseen Krefeld are also inviting visitors to discover the work of their conservators on this special day, from 3 to 5 pm at the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum.

During a special guided tour, Denise Klatt will use specific examples to explain conservation projects in the context of the exhibition Beautiful Anarchy: Johan Thorn Prikker and His Time. Sebastian Köhler has been a conservator at the Kunstmuseen Krefeld for 24 years and knows the works in the collection inside out. In a short lecture, he will discuss two works dating from around 1970, explaining the concepts underpinning their preservation and the specific criteria involved in faithfully reinstalling them in accordance with the artists’ original intentions.

Admission to the museum is charged at the regular rate. Registration is requested by email at servicekunstmuseen@krefeld.de or by telephone on +49 2151 97558-137.
